Also known as benzylacetone or 4-phenyl-2-butanone — a sweet, floral aromachemical with a soft honeyed-jasmine character. Rounded and slightly fruity, with a mild balsamic warmth; lends a natural-smelling lift to white-floral and honey accords without sharpness.AI · claude-opus-4-7

Uses in perfumery

This ketone has been suggested for use in perfume compositions, but does not seem to have any significant fragrance value or any outstanding olfactory properties. It could find some use in Narcissus, Jasmin or various floral bouquets for low-cost fragrances, where power and stability is important.

Production

Produced by hydrolysis of alpha-Phenylaceto acetonitrile or from Acetic acid plus Pheny]-acetic acid vapors over a heated catalyst.
