resinous

A faint, dry resinous odor reminiscent of pine rosin and old varnish, with a subtle balsamic-woody undertone. Abietic acid itself is only weakly aromatic — it functions more as a fixative and rosin-derived base note than a bright top-line material.AI · claude-opus-4-7

Appearance

The pure material is almost white, crystalline plates or powder

Solubility

Insoluble in water, soluble in alcohol and oils. Also soluble in aqueous solution of Sodium hydroxide.

Odor

The pure material is virtually odorless. The commercial material has a faint, pleasant and resinous odor.

Uses in perfumery

It is also the natural source and parent of several solvent-fixatives, used in perfumery: Abitol, Methyl abietate (Abalyn) and hydrogenated Methyl abietate (Hercolyn).

Uses in flavor

Certain derivatives of Abietic acid are used as emulsifiers and “cloudificators” in carbonated beverages to give visual impression of fruit juice content in beverages made with little or no “cloudy” natural juice. “Cloudy” Orange sodas are popular in certain countries.

Production

Produced by distillation of Rosin (from American Turpentine, e. g.) or by treatment with acid to isomerize the natural Levopimaric acid. Purification over the Diamyl- ammonium salt.

Compliance note. Restriction data is sourced directly from IFRA publications and preserved with its document excerpt. Perfume Foundry is a compliance-support tool — not a substitute for a qualified safety assessor (CPSR / PIF).
