Ambrein is the principal triterpene alcohol of natural ambergris, essentially odorless in pure form but developing a soft, warm, slightly musky-ambery character as it oxidizes into ambroxide and related degradation products. On its own it reads as a very faint, skin-like warmth rather than a bold amber note.AI · claude-opus-4-7

Appearance

Ambrein is an odorless solid material.

Odor

Ambrein is an odorless solid material, but it is a parent of numerous very important Ambregris perfume materials, including those produced in Nature.

Uses in perfumery

Oxidation products of Ambrein have been manufactured, and thus opened the door to partial synthesis of the Ambregris odor.

Production

One commercial product (Ambrone T or Ambrone clair, Takasago Perfumery Co. Ltd., Japan) is manufactured by way of ozonolysis of odorless Ambrein and concentration of the odorous, volatile oxidation products.
