Descriptors

An intensely sulfurous, pungent thiol material with a strong tropical-fruit facet reminiscent of passionfruit, blackcurrant bud and grapefruit zest. In extreme dilution it reads as juicy exotic fruit with a green, catty edge; neat it is aggressive and mercaptan-like.AI · claude-opus-4-7

Appearance

Colorless oily liquid.

Odor

When absolutely free from Thioglycollic acid, this ester has a faint, but pleasant aromatic-herbaceous odor, remotely reminiscent of Amyl acetate.

Uses in perfumery

However, it does not offer any unique fragrance notes that would justify its wider application in fragrances or flavors.

Production

Produced from (iso-)Amyl alcohol and Thioglycollic acid by direct esterification under azeotropic conditions (no catalytic acid added).
