Benzyl acetophenone (1,3-diphenyl-1-propanone) has a soft, sweet floral-balsamic character with honeyed and slightly powdery facets. It's mild and rounded, reminiscent of mimosa and hawthorn with a discreet almond-like warmth. Functions as a floralizer and mild fixative in blends.AI · claude-opus-4-7

Appearance

White crystals or crystalline powder or flakes.

Solubility

Practically insoluble in water, soluble in alcohol and oils.

Odor

Mild and sweet, balsamic-floral odor of excellent tenacity.

Uses in perfumery

This ketone, rarely offered commercially, finds some use in perfume compositions as a fixative and modifier in herbaceous-floral or woody-rosy fragrance types. It is a good fixative for Lavender and Fougere, but it does not contribute much odor, except a sweet, creamy-balsamic undertone, which is often quite desirable. It blends well with Ylang-Ylang, Labdanum, Ionones, etc. and it is stable under normal alkaline conditions in finished products.

Production

1) by catalytic reduction of Benzylidene acetophenone over Platinum oxide in Ethylacetate. 2) by oxidation of the corresponding alcohol (Phenyl-Phenylethylcarbinol) with Chromic acid.
