Colorless oily liquid. Solidifies in the cold to an opaque mass.
Insoluble in water, soluble in alcohol and oils.
Oily, but slightly pungent-fruity, herbaceous odor of moderate to poor tenacity. Less winey than Methylnonylketone (a naturally occurring isomer), and not quite as Orange-like. Greener and fruitier.
This ketone, rarely offered commercially, has been suggested for use in perfume compositions. However, after so much discussion about the possible hazards of using certain ketones (including the named isomer) in perfumes for cosmetic preparations, chances are that this ketone has little or no future in perfumery.
Produced from Valeric and Heptanoic acids by heating of the mixture over Thorium oxide to about 450° C.
