Butyl paraben is a preservative, not a fragrance material. It is essentially odorless, with at most a very faint waxy or phenolic nuance detectable only at high concentration. It contributes no meaningful olfactory character to a formulation.AI · claude-opus-4-7

Appearance

White crystals or crystalline powder.

Solubility

Almost insoluble in water, soluble in alcohol. Slightly soluble in oils.

Odor

Very faint odor.

Uses in perfumery

Used as a preservative in cosmetic preparations at the concentration of 0.1 percent or less. Even at 0.05%, it may influence the effect of a given perfume to a certain degree, partly because it can be present at a concentration of 10 to 25 percent of the perfume itself thus becoming a significant factor in the fragrance performance. In general however, it will not seriously alter the fragrance.

Production

Produced from Potassium salicylate via para-Hydroxybenzoic acid to the ester.
