Ambiguous name — 'Butyl' likely refers to a short-chain butyl ester (e.g. butyl acetate or butyl butyrate), which smells sweet, fruity and slightly solvent-like with a green pear or apple facet. Volatile and flashes off quickly on a blotter, leaving little residue.AI · claude-opus-4-7

Appearance

Colorless liquid.

Solubility

Practically insoluble in water, soluble in alcohol and oils.

Odor

Melon-Apple-like note.

Flavor

Dilutions at less than 20 ppm show a pleasant Apple-Banana-like taste, but higher concentrations seem to lack sweetness.

Uses in perfumery

This oxide, very rarely offered commercially, but occasionally appearing from various research laboratories, has been suggested for use in perfume compositions. It could lend interesting notes to fresh floral and floral-fruity fragrance types, and it blends very well with the sweet-green or mild-green, floral top-note chemicals.

Production

Produced from iso-Butyl linalool by oxidation with special oxidizing agents (e. g. Benzoyl peroxide).
