n-Butyl salicylate has a soft, sweet floral-herbal odor with a creamy salicylate character reminiscent of orchid and clover. Less sharp than methyl salicylate (no wintergreen bite), with a mild balsamic-green undertone that lends body to floral accords.AI · claude-opus-4-7

Appearance

Colorless liquid, solidifying in the cold.

Odor

Somewhat rough herbaceous chemical odor, resembling Ethyl benzoate (but weaker) with a trace of Wintergreen note.

Uses in perfumery

Used in perfume compositions as a modifier for higher esters of Salicylic acid. It produces a Fougere-like note with Coumarin and Lavandin - with or without Oakmoss - but not as attractive as the one obtainable with the Amy ester. Blends well with the herbaceous oils, with Pine needle oils and related chemicals (Bornyl family), with Cedarwood products and it gives good fixative effect along with the simple Nitromusks in low-cost perfumes.

Production

Produced by direct esterification of n-Butanol with Salicylic acid under azeotropic conditions.
