Di-tert-butyl sebacate is essentially odorless — it functions as a solvent/fixative and plasticizer rather than an odorant. Any perceptible character is a very faint waxy-oily nuance on the blotter.AI · claude-opus-4-7

Appearance

Colorless oily liquid. Solidifies in the cold.

Solubility

Insoluble in water, soluble in alcohol and oils.

Odor

Very faint, dry-musky odor, not as interesting as that of the #Butyl sebacate.

Uses in perfumery

Has at one time been suggested (and used) as a solvent for Nitromusks and a blender for same. However, it does not seem to offer any advantages over the newer solvents, and it does not contribute any highly interesting notes to the overall fragrance.

Production

Produced by direct esterification of tertiary-Butanol with Sebacic acid under azeotropic conditions.
