Appearance

Colorless or pale straw-colored liquid.

Solubility

Insoluble in water, soluble in alcohol and oils.

Odor

Sweet herbaceous-woody, quite powerful odor with some resemblance to the odor of beta-lonone. More diffusive, less tenacious, and not quite as floral.

Uses in perfumery

This rare chemical has been suggested for use in perfume compositions where Cyclocitrylidene acetaldehyde may have been desirable, but caused trouble in being unstable (alkaline conditions, etc.).

Production

Produced from several methods, e.g. from Cyclocitral via Grignard synthesis with Cyanogen chloride, or via the aldehyde and its oxime by treatment with Thionyl chloride or Acetic anhydride.
