Colorless mobile liquid.
Almost insoluble in water, soluble in alcohol and oils.
Powerful, sweet-herbaceous, diffusive odor of relatively poor tenacity. In high concentration rather gassy and not very pleasant, it develops sweet and agreeable notes upon dilution.
The material has been suggested for use in perfume compositions, but it is rarely available from the regular suppliers of perfume and flavor chemicals.
Produced by condensation of acetaldehyde with cyclopent-l-ene-J-aldehyde. The latter aldehyde can be prepared by a number of methods, e.g. by pyrolysis of Divinyl glycol.
