Appearance

Yellowish oily liquid, or yellowish needle-like crystals, melting at 30° C.

Solubility

Practically insoluble in water, soluble in alcohol, miscible in oils.

Odor

Extremely powerful, diffusive, gassy-fruity odor. In very high dilution pleasantly apple-like with a rose-like sweetness.

Flavor

In aqueous dilution below 10 ppm, the flavor is sweet, ethereal, intensely apple-like with a rosy undertone.

Uses in perfumery

This peculiar chemical is mentioned partly because of its unusual power and fragrance type, partly because it is one of the oldest of all 'unconventional' fragrance materials.

Production

Produced by chlorination (bubbling chlorine) of phenyl nitroethylene in dry chloroform solution.
