A soft, elegant ionone with a violet-floral character wrapped in creamy woody warmth. Less fruity than methyl ionone gamma and more velvety, with an orris-like powdery facet and a subtle apricot nuance. Rounded and diffusive, it lends a smooth suede-floral polish to compositions.AI · claude-opus-4-7

Appearance

Almost colorless or very pale yellowish or straw-colored, viscous liquid.

Solubility

Practically insoluble in water, soluble in alcohol and oils.

Odor

Warm, but rather dry Ambre-gris type odor of good tenacity. The woody and delicately dry notes of delta-Methylionone are further refined, but appear less woody, more Ambre-gris-like.

Uses in perfumery

This Ionone has been suggested for use in perfume compositions where large amounts of dry-sweet Ambregris-notes are called for, as in many modern aldehydic or non-floral types, or in the types developed since 'Je reviens', etc. This Ionone performs very well with Ambregris tincture and with Clary Sage absolute, refined Labdanum products or Oakmoss products, Galbanum, terpeneless Juniperberry, etc.

Production

Produced by selective hydrogenation of iso-Methyl-beta-ionone (so-called delta-Methylionone).
