Dimethyl octanol (tetrahydrogeraniol) is a soft, fresh floral-rosy alcohol with a clean citrus-peel edge. Compared to geraniol it is less sharp and more waxy-smooth, with a subtle green facet. Adds a natural, slightly soapy lift to rose, lily, and citrus accords.AI · claude-opus-4-7

Appearance

Colorless slightly oily liquid.

Solubility

Almost insoluble in water and glycerin. Soluble in alcohol, propylene glycol and oils.

Odor

Waxy, dry-rosy odor.

Flavor

It finds use in flavor compositions, although only in the rarer types such as floral, Rose, or various fruity flavors.

Uses in perfumery

Quite extensively used in perfume compositions, usually as a companion to Citronellol, Geraniol and Nerol, but in many cases the perfumer will deliberately avoid these other Rose-alcohols to emphasize the waxy or honeylike notes in a Rose base, and to make full use of the newer, purer Dimethyloctanol.

Uses in flavor

The concentration in ice cream will be about 50 ppm.

Production

1) by reduction of Geraniol (synthetic or from Citronella oil). 2) by reduction of Citronellol, Citronellal or Citral.
