A mild, diffusive floral-rosy material with a soft geranium-like character and a slightly waxy, clean undertone. Fairly low-key on its own but useful as a rounding, fixative floral note that supports rose and geranium accords.AI · claude-opus-4-7

Solubility

Insoluble in water, soluble in alcohol and oils

Odor

Mild, rather sweet odor of metallic-green Geranium type, not very natural, but quite pleasant in dilution

Uses in perfumery

Has been suggested for use in soap and detergent perfumes, partly as a modifier for Diphenyl methane, which is somewhat harsher, but also more powerful, partly as a fixative in general for Rose-type or Geranium-type low-cost fragrances

Production

1) from Benzyl chloride plus Sodium. 2) from Dichloroethylene (or beta-Phenyl-ethyl chloride) by condensation with Benzol, using Aluminium chloride in a Friedel-Crafts reaction.
