Ethyl tert-butyl ketone (pinacolone) has a sharp, pungent camphoraceous odor with minty and slightly solvent-like facets. It reads as a thin, cool ketonic freshness on a blotter and dissipates quickly, leaving little residue.AI · claude-opus-4-7

Production

Produced by treatment of Pinacone (Methyl-tertiary-butylketone) with Methyl iodide and Sodium amide. The process yields a number of homologues of subject material, and the Ethyl-tertiary-butyl ketone is the lowest boiling of these. The ketone can also be produced from Pentamethyl ethylene glycol by dehydration and rearrangement.
