Ethylene glycol monophenyl ether (phenoxyethanol) has a very faint, mild odor — slightly rose-like or floral in the loosest sense, mostly reading as a soft glycol-ether solvent. In perfumery it functions as a diluent/preservative rather than an odor-active material.AI · claude-opus-4-7

Appearance

Colorless liquid.

Solubility

2.7% soluble in water, soluble in aqueous alkali, miscible with glycerin, propylene glycol, alcohol and most perfume or flavor oils.

Odor

Mildly rosy, but also metallic odor of poor tenacity.

Flavor

Warm mouthfeel and slightly burning taste at concentrations near 20 ppm. Higher concentrations cause more pungent feeling and bitter taste.

Uses in perfumery

The title alcohol has found some use in perfume compositions as a blender, sometimes even called a fixative. The author feels that the fixative value of the material is practically nil, but that it does have some blending (mellowing) effect upon certain perfume compositions containing high amounts of chemicals. It is also used simply as a diluent of fairly harmless effect upon the odor of such low-cost perfumes.

Production

Produced from phenol and ethylene oxide under alkaline conditions.
