Descriptors
fruityaldehydic

A creamy, fatty-waxy aliphatic ketone with a mild fruity-citrus lift reminiscent of rue and unripe pear skin. Softer and rounder than the corresponding aldehydes, it has a slightly greasy, coconut-adjacent undertone that lingers into a subdued musky-waxy drydown.AI · claude-opus-4-7

Colorless oily liquid.

Solubility

Insoluble in water, soluble in alcohol and oils.

Odor

Fruity, aldehydic-herbal odor, more fruity than methyl nonyl ketone and less 'Rue'-like.

Uses in perfumery

Has been suggested for use in perfumery, but this ketone is not a common commercial item and does not offer any outstanding olfactory effects as compared to its homologues and isomers.

Production

Produced by Grignard reaction on ethyl magnesium chloride and octyl chloride. Other methods are based upon heptylmalonic ester reaction with propionyl chloride.
