Ethyl stearate is a very mild, waxy-fatty ester with a faint soapy character. On a blotter it reads as almost odorless at low levels, adding a soft, oily-creamy background rather than a distinct top note. Primarily used as a fixative or emollient carrier rather than for its own scent.AI · claude-opus-4-7

Appearance

Solid crystalline mass

Solubility

Insoluble in water, soluble in alcohol, miscible with most oils.

Odor

Virtually odorless when pure.

Flavor

Very faint waxy taste (or rather mouthfeel).

Uses in flavor

This ester is occasionally used in flavor compositions where a waxy taste (or mouthfeel) is desirable, e.g. in imitation honey or in certain types of chocolate flavor.

Production

Produced by esterification of ethanol with stearic acid. The acid is obtained from oleic acid by hydrogenation, a method which yields comparatively pure stearic acid, free from palmitic acid.
