Guaiacol allyl ether (eugenyl-like) smells warm, spicy and phenolic — reminiscent of clove and carnation with a smoky, slightly medicinal edge. Over time it settles into a soft balsamic-woody character with a subtle sweetness.AI · claude-opus-4-7

Appearance

Pale yellowish or almost colorless viscous oil.

Solubility

Insoluble in water, soluble in alcohol and oils.

Odor

Dry-peppery, rather choking and green odor with slightly fatty and remotely fruity notes.

Flavor

Sweet, but burning taste with a somewhat medicinal nuance.

Uses in perfumery

This phenolether has never achieved much popularity, even when it was freely available some 10 years ago. It could find some application in heavier floral fragrances, perhaps trace amounts in Carnation and Wallflower bases, variations of Rose fragrances, etc.

Production

1) from Pyrocatechol by treatment with Allyl bromide in Acetone in the presence of Potassium carbonate under cooling, followed by Methylation with Dimethylsulfate in aqueous alkali. 2) from Guaiacol by reaction with Allyl bromide.
