Appearance

Colorless prismatic crystals.

Solubility

Insoluble in water, soluble in alcohol, miscible with perfume oils.

Odor

Mild, rather sweet and very tenacious balsamic-woody odor with an almost floral undertone and a pepperiness which seem to be apparent only in impure material.

Uses in perfumery

Guaiol as such is not often used in perfumery. It could provide a suitable basis for many woody and floral-woody complexes, since it blends excellently with floral odors as well as naturally with all types of woody odors. It could form an excellent basis for Carnation and a pleasant background in a Chypre or modern woody-aldehydic fragrance.

Production

Produced by extraction from Guaiacwood oil with a volatile solvent, usually Acetone, Ethanol or Ethylether.
