Solubility

Practically insoluble in water, soluble in alcohol and oils.

Odor

Powerful, oily-green creamy-waxy odor with a discrete undertone of peppery-earthy-mushroomy character.

Flavor

Sweet-earthy-oily taste with some resemblance to Mushroom.

Uses in perfumery

This alcohol, a higher homologue of the more commonly used Amyl vinyl carbinol, has found some use in perfumery as a fortifier for herbaceous or sweet-woody-earthy notes, e.g. Lavender, Oakmoss, Vetiver, Coumarin, etc.

Uses in flavor

The alcohol finds some use in flavor compositions, mainly as a modifier for Amyl vinyl carbinol in Mushroom flavors.

Production

Produced from Hexyl magnesium bromide plus Acrolein by Grignard reaction.
