Ortho-hydroxy acetophenone (2'-hydroxyacetophenone) has a sweet, phenolic-balsamic odor reminiscent of hay, coumarin, and bitter almond, with subtle tobacco and honeyed nuances. On drydown it becomes softer and more balsamic, lending a warm, slightly powdery sweetness.AI · claude-opus-4-7

Appearance

Almost colorless oily liquid.

Solubility

Slightly soluble in water, soluble in alcohol and oils.

Odor

Sweet and rather heavy-floral, also somewhat herbaceous odor, reminiscent of New Mown Hay or Hawthorne in higher concentration, almost Mimosa-like in extreme dilution.

Uses in perfumery

This simple, but relatively rare chemical has been suggested for use in perfume compositions as a modifier for Coumarin, Methyl-acetophenone, Acetanisole, etc. as a powerful floral, heavy background note in Acacia, Mimosa, Wallflower, and in various floral bouquets.

Production

Produced from Phenylacetate by heating with Aluminium chloride. A mixture of ortho- and para-hydroxyacetophenone is formed, and the ratio can be controlled by heat and other conditions.
