Uses in perfumery

It is extremely important as an intermediate in the manufacture of many interesting perfume and flavor chemicals. It is also a breakdown product in Nature’s Lignin decomposition, and therefore present, mostly in the shape of derivatives, in numerous natural products.

Production

The subject aldehyde is produced by many ways, e.g.: 1) from Phenol in the manufacture of Salicylic aldehyde (which is the ortho-isomer). 2) from para-Aminobenzaldehyde by Diazo-reaction. 3) from Phenol and anhydrous Zinc cyanide in Benzene, followed by hydrolysis.
