Alpha-ionone has a soft, dry violet-floral character with a woody-orris undertone and a subtle fruity nuance reminiscent of raspberry and cedar. Compared to beta-ionone it is warmer, sweeter, and more floral, with less of the sharp woody edge. On the blotter it opens powdery-violet and settles into a delicate, slightly candied woody drydown.AI · claude-opus-4-7

This material, rarely offered under its proper chemical name, and often appearing as a mixture with above chemical as chief component, is occasionally used in perfume compositions. It is particularly suitable for lipstick perfumes and certain types of cream perfume, etc. where lasting, sweet-fruity notes are desirable.
The subject material finds some use in flavor compositions, particularly in Raspberry imita- tion for baked goods or hard candy, where the fixative effect of this material comes to use. Although imitation Fig or Date is not fre- quently called for, it is interesting to observe the odor similarity of this item to the natural materials although most conceivably it is not present in those natural products.
