Appearance

Colorless or almost colorless oily liquid.

Solubility

Almost insoluble in water, soluble in alcohol and oils.

Odor

Warm, soft, woody-violet-like odor, generally considered slightly weaker and not as radiant as that of alpha-Irone.

Uses in perfumery

This isomer has achieved very little interest among the creative perfumers. Its main role will probably be that of contributing notes to a mixture of Irone isomers in order to arrive at the most attractive violet-like nuances.

Production

Produced by isolation from the volatile oil of Orris rhizome, preferably from oils in which this isomer occurs abundantly. It has also been prepared synthetically from Pseudo-ionone.
