2,6-Lutidine has a sharp, pungent pyridine-like odor — nutty and roasted with cocoa and coffee facets, and a distinctly animalic, almost fecal undertone in concentration. On dilution it reads as toasted, earthy and slightly meaty, useful for adding realism to coffee, cocoa and roasted-nut accords.AI · claude-opus-4-7

Pungent, yet light and nauseating-ethereal-herbaceous odor with sweet, breadlike undertones. Its topnote has been compared to the odor of human breath after Vitamin B-12 injection.

Uses in perfumery

Has been suggested for use in perfume compositions to introduce sweet, meat-like, smoky notes, e.g. in artificial Oakmoss, etc.

Production

Produced by isolation from coal tar, purified over the Mercury salt, or synthetically from Ethyl acetoacetate plus Formaldehyde plus Ammonia.
