Insoluble in water, soluble in alcohol and oils. Poorly soluble in diluted alcohol.

Odor

Somewhat harsh, gassy and sweet odor, reminiscent of Fennel, and of poor tenacity.

Uses in perfumery

This hydrocarbon finds a little use in perfumery, usually in technical (impure) grade, partly for masking or industrial perfumery, partly as a minor component in certain artificial essential oils.

Production

1) by electrolytic reduction of Menthone. 2) by catalytic hydrogenation of para-Cymene. Method No. 2) is the most commonly employed, and the least expensive.
