Appearance

Colorless oily liquid.

Solubility

Insoluble in water, soluble in alcohol and oils.

Odor

Sweet, somewhat pungent, buttery-creamy odor with floral notes upon proper dilution.

Uses in perfumery

This ketone, not a very common perfume chemical, has found a little use as a modifier for the Acetophenone derivatives in floral-woody and floral-herbaceous fragrance types. It gives interesting variations of Mimosa-like effect with Labdanum derivatives or with iso-Butyl-cinnamate or similar Labdanum materials.

Production

Produced by rearrangement of Phenylpropionate with Aluminum chloride in Carbon disulfide solution, followed by Methylation with Dimethyl sulfate in weak aqueous alkaline solution.
