A pungent, oily fusel-alcohol note reminiscent of higher alcohols in fermentation — sharp, slightly winey and solvent-like on first sniff, with a soft fatty-fruity undertone as it fades. Related to isoamyl alcohol in character but heavier and less banana-like.AI · claude-opus-4-7

Appearance

Colorless liquid.

Solubility

1.7% soluble in water, miscible with alcohol and oils, soluble in Propylene glycol.

Odor

Powerful oily-green somewhat herbaceous, but overall chemical or unnatural odor of poor tenacity. Repeated inhalation of its vapors cause coughing.

Uses in perfumery

This alcohol is used very rarely as such in perfumery, but its derivatives, esters, etc. are used more widely. The alcohol itself finds some application as a masking agent on account of its low boiling point and availability in volume at low cost.

Production

Produced by hydrogenation of Methyl-iso-butylketone.
