Appearance

Colorless, slightly viscous liquid.

Solubility

Almost insoluble in water, soluble in alcohol and oils.

Odor

Sweet, balsamic-floral, tenacious odor of 'Oriental' type. It is less 'Cinnamon-like' and more 'Styrax-like' than Cinnamic alcohol, but it does not compete favourably with a pure Cinnamic alcohol with respect to natural floral notes.

Uses in perfumery

This alcohol was introduced during a period of scarcity of Styrax and was particularly promoted as a basis for making artificial Styrax. It still finds some use as a modifier in balsamic and Oriental blends.

Production

Produced by regulated hydrogenation of alpha-Methylcinnamic aldehyde.
