A soft, natural-smelling citrus-floral ester with a green, slightly waxy character reminiscent of citronella and rose petals. Milder and rounder than citronellol, with a fresh lemony-geranium facet that fades into a clean, slightly herbaceous floralcy.AI · claude-opus-4-7

Solubility

Almost insoluble in water, soluble in alcohol and oils.

Odor

Refreshing, winey-green, fruity and brandy-like, apple-like odor of moderate to poor tenacity.

Uses in perfumery

This ester, not often offered commercially, has found a little use in perfume compositions, mainly as part of new topnote complexes with natural-green materials for rose, muguet, peony, and in refreshing, outdoor-type fragrances.

Production

Produced by oxidation of citronellol (or citronellal) with CrO3 to yield citronellic acid, which is esterified with methanol.
