Methyl heptyl acetaldehyde (2-methylnonanal / aldehyde C-10 MNA) is a fatty aliphatic aldehyde with a bright, waxy-citrus character reminiscent of orange peel and candle wax. In dilution it opens sharp and slightly greasy, then softens into a clean, sweet-citrus aldehydic effect typical of the C-series aldehydes.AI · claude-opus-4-7

Appearance

Colorless oily liquid.

Solubility

Insoluble in water, soluble in alcohol and oils.

Odor

Powerful and diffusive woody-green, also slightly citrusy odor of moderate to poor tenacity.

Uses in perfumery

This aldehyde is very rarely offered under its proper chemical name, but it finds use as a 'captive' chemical inside many perfume houses with chemical manufacturing facilities.

Production

Produced by Darzen’s type synthesis by condensation of Methylheptylketone with Ethyl monochloroacetate in presence of Sodium ethanoate, followed by hydrolysis to the acid and heating under vacuum to produce the aldehyde. Also from alpha-Heptyl acrolein by hydrogenation.
