A soft, honeyed floral aroma chemical (also known as Styrallyl Phenylacetate) with a warm rosy-gardenia character and a subtle balsamic-fruity undertone. In dilution it lends a natural, slightly narcotic white-floral sweetness reminiscent of hyacinth and honeysuckle, adding roundness and body to floral accords.AI · claude-opus-4-7

Appearance

Colorless viscous liquid.

Solubility

Insoluble in water, soluble in alcohol and oils.

Odor

Practically odorless when pure. Most commercial products carry a perceptible phenyl-acetic type odor, while a few show that an excess of Methyl phenyl carbinol has been used in the reaction in order to prevent the appearance of dominating Phenylacetic acid notes.

Uses in perfumery

This ester finds limited use in perfume compositions, mainly as a fixative and modifier in heavy or woody florals, in Oriental fragrances etc. It provides generally a “mild Honeysuckle” effect in such fragrances.

Production

Produced by esterification of Methyl phenyl carbinol with Phenylacetic acid under azeotropic conditions.
