Descriptors
camphoraceous

A very sharp, volatile ketonic solvent note — pungent, ethereal and slightly fruity, reminiscent of acetone with a faint camphor edge. Flashes off quickly leaving little residual character. Rarely used as a perfumery odorant; more often encountered as a reactive intermediate or trace impurity.AI · claude-opus-4-7

Appearance

Colorless mobile liquid.

Solubility

Slightly soluble in water, miscible with alcohol, propylene glycol and oils.

Odor

Diffusive, ethereal-camphoraceous odor, pleasant in dilution, somewhat pungent-choking when concentrated.

Flavor

Ethereal-vinous taste, but slightly bitter at concentrations higher than 50 ppm.

Uses in perfumery

This ketone, commercially available in volume, has found some use as part of masking odors for industrial purposes. Its low cost and diffusive odor, also partly its very poor tenacity make it a useful masking odor where the objectionable odor is of high volatility (solvents, fuels, acrylic odors, etc.).

Production

1) by oxidation of Methyl-iso-propylicarbinol (2-Methyl-3-butanol). 2) from iso-Propyl magnesium bromide plus Acetaldehyde, followed by reaction as 1). 3) from 2-Methylbutene plus Hydriodic acid via Methyl-iso-propyl carbinyl iodide.
