Beta-Naphthol methyl ether (Nerolin Yara Yara) has a sweet, clean orange-blossom and neroli-like character with a distinct powdery, slightly waxy facet. It's reminiscent of white flowers and old-school cologne bases, with a subtle almost soapy floral lift.AI · claude-opus-4-7

Appearance

White shiny crystal leaves.

Solubility

Almost insoluble in water, soluble in cold alcohol, somewhat better in hot alcohol, miscible with most perfume oils.

Odor

The odor of highly purified material is intensely sweet, Orangeblossom-Acacia-like, very tenacious, but many commercial grades are poorly refined and display rather harsh notes.

Uses in perfumery

This ether is used extensively in low-cost fragrances for household products, soaps, detergents, and particularly in products where heat-and-alkali-stability are required.

Production

Produced from beta-Naphtholsodium with Dimethylsulfate in weak aqueous alkali. Also from beta-Naphthol and a surplus of Methanol under reflux with sulfuric acid catalyst.
