Octyl pelargonate is a nearly odorless emollient ester used primarily as a fixative or diluent. On close inspection it has a very faint, clean fatty-oily nuance with a slight waxy character, but contributes almost no scent of its own to a composition.AI · claude-opus-4-7

Colorless oily liquid.
Insoluble in water, soluble in alcohol and oils.
Peculiar earthy-floral, and oily citrusy odor of excellent tenacity.
The odor characteristics of this ester do not invite the perfumer to much experimenting. Although the overall odor of the chemical itself is rather weak, it can supply quite an amount of tonalities, not always desirable at the same time. With proper blending, however, the ester can be directed in the wanted area, it may supply pleasant mushroomy-earthy notes with Vetiver and Oakmoss, while it may add oily-citrusy notes to a Bergamot composition, and warmth and green-earthy undertones in a Rose.
Produced by azeotropic esterification of z-Octanol with Nonanoic acid.
