Appearance

Odor

Practically odorless when pure.

Uses in perfumery

This ester has been offered as a perfume material, but since it does not contribute any interesting notes, and since it is more expensive than the conventional solvents and odorless blenders, there is very little demand for the material. Its fixative effect is not distinctly superior to that of many common materials, but the title ester does lend a mild, floral note to a composition if used at relatively high percentage, e.g. 10-20%, in mild floral types, Lilac, Muguet, etc. It is not as sweet, floral or odorous as Benzyl salicylate. Briefly, the material is definitely dispensable.

Production

Produced by azeotropic esterification of n-Octanol with Salicylic acid.
