Colorless liquid.

Solubility

0.03% soluble in water, miscible with alcohol and oils.

Odor

Floral, but somewhat harsh odor of Lily-Jasmin type. Impure products may show phenolic notes, while a 'metallic' note seems to be normal in this material.

Uses in perfumery

The title material has been suggested for use in fragrances, but the author is of the impression that this material has not been in common use in perfumery for many decades.

Production

Produced by acetylation of Phenol with Acetyl-chloride and aqueous alkali in the cold.
