Solubility

Almost insoluble in water, soluble in alcohol and oils.

Odor

Light and sweet-herbaceous odor with discretely citrusy-lemony notes, overall resembling Verbena, although not nearly as lemony.

Uses in perfumery

This alcohol has been recommended for use in perfume compositions, but it has rarely been offered under its proper chemical name.

Production

1) from Benzaldehyde by condensation with Butyraldehyde, followed by complete hydrogenation and reduction of the unsaturated aldehyde. 2) from Phenyl magnesium chloride and Ethylene oxide. 3) by reduction of Phenylpentenoic acid, ethylester.
