A soft, rosy-green floral alcohol with a light hyacinth and lily-of-the-valley character. Mildly sweet and slightly earthy, it has a natural, dewy petal quality that rounds and freshens floral accords without adding much sharpness.AI · claude-opus-4-7

Appearance

Colorless oily liquid.

Solubility

Almost insoluble in water, soluble in alcohol and oils.

Odor

Sweet, but rather heavy, herbaceous-rosy odor, heavier and less rosy than Phenylethyl-alcohol, but more tenacious.

Uses in perfumery

The title alcohol has, on account of its faintly woody-green floral character, found use in perfume compositions as part of the base for Mimosa and Cassie compositions, Rose bases, Oriental fragrance types, etc.

Production

1) from Phenylacetaldehyde and Acetaldehyde by condensation, followed by hydrogenation and reduction of the unsaturated aldehyde. 2) from Phenylethyl magnesiumbromide plus Ethylene oxide in a Grignard type reaction.
