Pinacol has a mild, slightly camphoraceous and fresh-herbal odor with a cool green edge. It's a relatively weak, somewhat alcoholic-smelling diol used more as a functional/reaction intermediate than as a headline perfumery material.AI · claude-opus-4-7

Appearance

Colorless crystal needles.

Solubility

Slightly soluble in cold water, soluble in hot water, alcohol and oils.

Odor

Powerful, sweet, bread-like, honey-like, diffusive odor of poor tenacity. Although the impression is that of a warm, aromatic and sweet odor, there is an overall 'chemical' odor to the commercial product.

Uses in perfumery

The subject glycol has been used at times in perfume compositions for industrial masking purposes, often for masking problems in which iso-Phorone is also used, masking of solvent odors, etc.

Production

Produced by reduction of Acetone.
