A sharp, phenolic aromachemical with a pronounced medicinal, tar-like character reminiscent of creosote and Band-Aid. As it develops it shows a dry, leathery-smoky facet with faint animalic warmth, similar in family to para-cresol but softer and more resinous.AI · claude-opus-4-7

Appearance

White or colorless, needlelike crystals.

Solubility

Slightly soluble in water, soluble in alcohol, oils and aqueous alkali.

Odor

Dry-woody, warm, spicy-medicinal odor of moderate to poor tenacity. Less sweet than the Ethyl- and Methyl-derivative (para-Cresol), but also less penetratingly medicinal.

Uses in perfumery

The title material has been suggested for use in perfume compositions as a modifier for para-Cresol and other phenols. However, it lacks the ability to perform with any sort of floral note, such as obtained with para-Cresol. Accordingly, the use of the title material becomes very limited, and it is reasonably fair to say that the title phenol is dispensable in perfumery.

Production

1) by isolation from Eucalyptus polybractea oil. 2) from Magnesium para-iso-propylphenyl-bromide by air oxidation.
