This material has been suggested for use in perfume compositions, and it is occasionally available, since it can be produced on a commercial scale. It is not nearly as well known as the para-isomer, however, and one reason may be that it is difficult to produce in such a state of purity that it remains solid at storage temperature. As a base for Rose, Lilac, Appleblossom and other mild florals, and as a modifier in many herbaceous fragrance types, it blends well with the conventional materials, but tends to dull the overall fragrance, in other words, it needs skillful addition of powerful odorants or topnote complexes.
Produced from Benzyl magnesiumchloride and Formaldehyde. The method is rather unique for this isomer.
