Ambiguous shorthand — 'Tolyl' alone is not a fully specified material; it typically prefixes a family of aromatic chemicals (tolyl aldehyde, tolyl acetate, p-cresyl / tolyl alcohol, tolyl isobutyrate). As a general profile, tolyl-family materials tend to smell floral-aromatic with a sweet, slightly medicinal or almond-like nuance and a warm balsamic undertone. Recommend clarifying which specific tolyl derivative is meant before formulating.AI · claude-opus-4-7

Uses in perfumery

It blends excellently with all the conventional materials, floral and non-floral, and offers good basis for experiments with new variations of Lilac, Rose, Appleblossom, Geranium, Fougére, etc. It is stable in soap and compatible with all the “troublesome” fragrance chemicals. As a companion to high grade Terpineol in Lilac fragrances, it is one of the most useful low-cost materials

Production

1) from para-Tolyl magnesium bromide plus Acetaldehyde. 2) by hydrolysis of para-Methyl benzyl chloride.
