Warm, sweet balsamic resin with a pronounced vanilla-like facet and a soft powdery, almost cinnamic undertone. Rich and syrupy in character, it gives a rounded, comforting sweetness that clings to blotters for days and deepens into a smooth ambery-vanillic drydown.AI · claude-opus-4-7

Appearance

The 'Almond' grade consists mainly of white or cream-colored brittle pieces, somewhat resembling almonds. Other grades are solid masses, dark blocks of gray or brown-gray, uneven lumps containing more or less quantities of dirt, sand, wood splinters, etc.

Odor

Lower grades of Sumatra Benzoin have odor characteristics in common with Styrax, i.e. more harsh odor than 'Almond' benzoin. The Sumatra type will remain a coarser product which can be used in perfumes of the more harsh-balsamic, sharp-floral type, e.g. hyacinth, new mown hay, etc.

Uses in perfumery

Benzoin Sumatra is extensively used as a replacement for Siam Benzoin which is far more expensive. It can be used in perfumes of the more harsh-balsamic, sharp-floral type.
