Warm, earthy root aroma with a soft sweet-balsamic undertone reminiscent of old-fashioned root beer and licorice. Dry and slightly medicinal with woody-herbal facets that linger over a subtle vanillic warmth.AI · claude-opus-4-7

Arctander monograph

Perfume and Flavor Materials of Natural Origin, page 356.

steam distillation
Odor

The olfactory characteristics of the oil have been described and are apparently without interest to the perfumer or the flavorist.

Flavor

As a matter of fact, it has very little flavor at all.

Uses in flavor

Sarsaparilla extracts are still used in certain types of soft drink (without any flavor effect), and are still used in pharmaceutical preparations (also without any effect).

Production

The root has been submitted to steam distillation, but it yields less than 0.01% of essential oil.

Compliance note. Restriction data is sourced directly from IFRA publications and preserved with its document excerpt. Perfume Foundry is a compliance-support tool — not a substitute for a qualified safety assessor (CPSR / PIF).
