Appearance

Colorless mobile liquid.

Solubility

Insoluble in water, almost insoluble in Propylene glycol and Glycerin, soluble in alcohol, miscible with most oils.

Odor

Pure Dipentene smells pleasantly citrusy, almost lemon-like, fresh and sweet.

Uses in perfumery

Good grade Dipentene is very useful in perfumery as a 'lift' in citrusy fragrances, and in the reconstruction of many essential oils (Bergamot, Lime, Lemon, etc.).

Production

Produced by isolation (fractionation) from American Pine oil, and from rosin oils. It also appears as a by-product in the manufacture of Terpineol (particularly in Europe) and in various synthetic products made from alpha-Pinene or Turpentine oil. Also by thermal polymerisation of Isoprene.

Specification
This material carries a uniform specification rather than per-category caps. Verify supplier material meets the criteria below before use.
Oxidation products of Limonene, especially hydroperoxides, have been demonstrated to be potent sensitizers. d-, l- and dl-Limonene and natural products containing substantial amounts of it, should only be used when the level of (hydro)peroxides is kept to the lowest practical level, for instance by adding antioxidants at the time of production. The addition of 0.1% BHT or α-Tocopherol for example has shown great efficiency. Such products should have a peroxide value of less than 20 millimoles per liter, determined according to the IFRA analytical method for the determination of the peroxide value, which can be downloaded from the IFRA website (www.ifrafragrance.org).
